American recreational vehicle icon Airstream is aiming to help its customers go farther and stay longer in its range of touring coaches after revealing they will benefit from a new power system that utilises top-of-the-range lithium batteries.

Airstream’s Class B RVs – the Atlas, the Interstate 24, and the Interstate 19 – will now all feature two 100Ah deep cycle lithium batteries (LiFePO4) made by fellow American firm Battle Born that will give users more power for longer when not hooked up on a campsite.

This new battery set-up will charge up to five times faster than traditional lead acid batteries due to a lower internal resistance – if your lithium batteries are fully drained when you start charging, it will take about 8 hours for them to reach full, with a 25Amp power supply. The LiFePO4 batteries also feature two to three times more usable power than traditional batteries and have a 100 per cent depth of discharge, meaning users can completely deplete them before recharging.

As well as the additional durability and lifespan benefits of these batteries over traditional types, this new system on Airstream Class B RVs will also include an upgraded solar controller with Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), which helps to optimise solar energy from the sun by actively tracking voltage and output of solar panels.
